Student Success Stories

What our graduates have to say

"I dropped out of high school my sophomore year. After dealing with a multitude of problems—including loss, moving between homes, and taking care of my grandfather—I decided that I wanted my GED. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get to the places I wanted to go in life without an education. I searched for weeks, calling place after place, looking for a program that was a good fit and affordable. I felt lost and hopeless until I stumbled upon the Family Literacy Center.

FLC is completely free of charge, offers tutoring, and provides an overall amazing program that I will always be grateful for. Every single staff member who works here has been nothing short of exemplary. Without this program, I wouldn’t be able to go to the places I want in life

Through the process of testing, learning, and listening, my scores improved. Upon graduating, I will never forget the folks at the Family Literacy Center who helped me through my entire journey. If you are, or were, in the position I was in, it is never too late to get your GED diploma. I am eternally grateful for the help they provided me."

I left high school in 11th grade when I became pregnant. At the time, I didn’t think I’d ever be able to go back and finish my education. With two young kids, life got busy, but I always wanted to show them the importance of not giving up. That’s when I found the Family Literacy Center. The staff were welcoming and supportive, helping me balance being a mom and a student. With their encouragement and tutoring, I earned my GED in July 2025. It was one of the proudest moments of my life. Now, I’m working with GST Michigan Works! to find a long-term career that fits my goals and helps me build a better future for my family. If you’re thinking about finishing your GED, don’t wait—believe in yourself and take that first step.

Jalen also describes how his specialist helped him apply for a job at Kay Jewelers and prepared him for success in the interview process. She helped Jalen get the right clothes to wear and prepare his resume - and he was hired! Through JMG Jalen explored different career paths including culinary and law enforcement jobs. He ended up enrolling in a criminal justice program and hopes to get into police work after he graduates from college. "The JMG program is great because it helps students who don't have the support and everything they need to get through college, or even begin college. They helped me with everything from college to other stuff that was going on in life during college, like the clothes for the interview and my resume." - Jalen
